Reflections on HEFWA: Higher Education Financial Wellness Alliance

Participating in this summit introduced me to some of the most passionate and empathetic individuals I've encountered in a long time. It was truly inspiring to be among people whose primary mission is to empower students by guiding them through the complexities of financial wellness. What struck me most, beyond their visible dedication?

Many shared personal stories of their own financial missteps. Their honesty was not about judgment but about genuine empathy and a shared commitment to learning and teaching. Their courage in admitting imperfections was refreshing.

Regardless of age or status, we all shared common human experiences. We discussed nervousness about public speaking, and the overwhelming nature of our roles. Yet, it was reassuring to hear respected leaders in their fields acknowledge similar struggles and cheer each other on.

Courage means showing up, sharing vulnerabilities, and ensuring everyone moves forward supported towards their goals.

Takeaways:

1. Focus on one action item at your exhibit table. Don't try and tell people about every program, it's too overwhelming.

2. It can be very impactful just to sit near a student while they work on their  finances.  Take that extra step to help them, you don't have to do it for them, but serve as a guide.

3. You can do it, don't make mountains out of molehills. I was nervous about hosting a panel, it was all in my head. Support from others made all the difference for me. I will take that example when working with others. If we help each other do greater things we can change the world.
